Ocean Blue
Beneath the Rhythm and Sound (Sire)
(STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
To find contemporaries of Echo & The Bunnymen you needn’t cross the Atlantic. With its third LP, Hershey, Pa., quartet the Ocean Blue rings in a subtle alternative rock sound with swirling keyboards. David Schelzel reconstitutes Morrissey’s phlegmy vocal style on “Don’t Believe Everything You Hear.” Hinged to themes of adolescent confusion and healthy skepticism are songs like “Bliss is Unaware” and the poetic “Ice Skating at Night.”
