An ordinance banning fashion shows featuring scantily clad models and most other “adult entertainment” is now on the books in Joliet, but not before one councilman objected to the new law and admitted attending such shows in the past.

“I’ve gone to some of those places,” said Manuel Palacios, who cast the only dissenting vote. “I don’t think it’s fair,” he said. “We shouldn’t police things that shouldn’t be policed.”

The statute, introduced by Mayor Arthur Schultz, passed by a 6-1 vote and bans fashion shows featuring lingerie or bathing suits as well as raffles for clothing items in all establishments with liquor licenses.

Joliet resident Russell Kroll objected to what he said was a “repressive” measure and that there was “no consideration for the rights” of customers.

Joliet has banned nudity from taverns and restaurants since 1982.

A number of Chicago suburbs have similar laws on the books banning so-called “gentleman’s clubs,” which usually offer entertainment. Earlier this year, a Chicago Heights businessman who runs such an operation, tried and failed to get a liquor license for a similar club in Joliet.
