Dave Hole

Working Overtime

(Alligator)

(STAR)(STAR)(STAR)

On his second album for Chicago’s Alligator Records, Australian slide guitar whiz Dave Hole once again serves notice that the blues is truly an international genre. Using an unorthodox approach that finds him playing over the top of the guitar neck, he makes his guitar alternately cry with sadness and moan with pleasure throughout “Working Overtime.” Hole’s gritty vocals are a perfect match for his guitar playing, especially when they echo his guitar lines on “Stormy Seas” and an acoustic version of Muddy Waters’ “I Can’t Be Satisfied.” While his rocked-up approach may not appeal to purists, there’s no denying Hole’s passion for the blues on “Working Overtime.”
