Willowbrook will pay nearly $11,000 to install a tornado siren in Ridgemoor Park while contributing to neighboring Burr Ridge’s tornado-warning system as well, officials said last week.
Willowbrook officials had agreed last year to pay Burr Ridge $3,000 toward a tornado siren erected near the Burr Ridge public works facility that could serve both towns. But because Burr Ridge had made no move since last fall to buy the siren, Willowbrook officials rescinded their offer and decided to build their own.

Yet trustees didn’t want any ill will between neighbors. So while they agreed to pay Crestwood-based Braniff Communications Inc. $10,900 to install a warning siren within Willowbrook’s village limits, Village Board members said they would contribute 20 percent of the cost of a siren in Burr Ridge or $3,000, whichever is less.
The decision came after Burr Ridge officials explained they had delayed buying the siren until they received a financial commitment from Downers Grove Township officials to help with the siren’s cost. The township didn’t come through until September, however, and by then Willowbrook had rescinded its offer, said Burr Ridge administrator Steven Stricker.
The compromise will preserve relations between the towns and the dual sirens are expected to improve the tornado-warning system, officials said.
