A 52-year-old Arlington Heights man working on a state highway walked into the path of a truck Monday and was struck and killed, said Kane County sheriff’s authorities.
Edward J. Jelen of 1711 Wilke Rd. was pronounced dead on the scene, authorities said.
Jelen was working on Illinois Highway 56 about a mile north of Hankes Road in Sugar Grove Township when the accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. Monday.
Authorities said Jelen apparently did not see the southbound truck when he began crossing Illinois 56 to retrieve a tool left on the other side.

Witnesses told deputies the truck driver, a 53-year Mundelein man, attempted to swerve to avoid Jelen. The driver was not cited.
