Police and fire officials are investigating the cause of a three-alarm fire Sunday that razed the Richton Lanes bowling alley and the Down N’ Under country and western bar in Richton Park.

Some 75 firefighters from 14 departments were called in to battle the blaze at 22413 Governors Highway, said Richton Park police Sgt. Leonard Czaplewski.

Police were first dispatched to the scene around 6:30 a.m. in response to a burglar alarm.

Additional personnel were called in as the fire spread quickly through the structure, which housed 32 bowling lanes as well as the lower-level lounge.

At one point the roof collapsed; however, no injuries were reported.

Officials are uncertain what started the blaze, although Czaplewski said it apparently began inside the building.

The bowling alley and lounge are owned by Will Swafford and Rosemary Wire, a Chicago Heights couple who had planned to expand the dance hall.
