Village Council members drew kudos from restaurant owners last week after commissioners agreed to increase the number of liquor licenses and ease some license restrictions.

The plan, proposed last month by the Downers Grove Chamber of Commerce liquor task force and the village staff, will increase the number of licenses to 76 from 51 and eliminate geographic restrictions. Such restrictions forced several restaurants to drop plans to open, depriving the village of sales-tax revenue, said chamber President Larry Long.

The plan allows 25 beer-and-wine licenses for restaurants with 35 seats or more, an increase of eight. Restaurants with more than 125 seats can now apply for one of the 36 full liquor licenses, up 11 from the current 25. Nine restaurants with between 75 and 125 seats will be allowed to petition for a new “service bar only” license, while three restaurants of 125 seats or more will be able to seek a full liquor license for an office location.
