For starters, St. Charles scored on its first five possessions. For good measure, Michael Baughman blocked a fourth-quarter punt and Chris Benters recovered it in the end zone to cap a 35-7 victory over De Kalb Friday night in rainy St. Charles.

Throughout, the eighth-ranked Saints used a wide assortment of talents to score a wide assortment of ways and improve to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Upstate Eight.

Quarterback Ryan Evans threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Todd Wyatt. He also kicked field goals of 45 and 41 yards. Kirk Wilderson rushed for 95 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown. Charley Parker rushed for 94 yards and scored from 6 yards out. Throw in a safety, and St. Charles clicked on all cylinders.

The Saints gained 290 yards total offense and held De Kalb (0-6, 0-6) to 156, 62 of which came when Chad Beaty connected with Jason Mattis for the Barbs’ lone score.

Wheaton-Warrenville South 42, Glenbard North 7: Tim Lester hit David Steinbraker for a 20-yard touchdown and Doug MacLeod on a 53-yard bomb-both before halftime-but failed to render Wheaton coach John Thorne starry-eyed afterward.

Such is life for the quarterback of a top-ranked team.

“We did things a lot better than we did last week,” Thorne conceded, “but we still need to work on our passing.”

Lester finished 4 for 9 for 137 yards and the two touchdowns.

Bobby Nelson (nine carries, 78 yards) opened the scoring with a 2-yard run, and Wheaton-Warrenville (6-0, 4-0) led 35-0 by halftime of the Du Page Valley contest.

The back-breaker for Glenbard North (2-4, 2-2) came with 1:49 to play in the half when James Johnson broke a 21-yard TD on a 4th-and-10 play.

Steve Schnurstein led the defense, setting up one touchdown with a 48-yard interception return and scoring another when he recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Naperville North 44, Glenbard East 12: Mike Rutkosky sprinted clear of his pursuers and Levelle Brown faked them out to lead No. 3 Naperville North to the Du Page Valley victory.

“When Rutkosky gets in the open, no one can catch him, while Levelle Brown is more of a shake-and-bake runner and can run for distance,” said Naperville North coach Larry McKeon.

Brown (eight carries, 84 yards) ran for a 3-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter and a 20-yarder on the first play of the second. Rutkosky (seven carries, 111 yards) hauled in an 11-yard touchdown toss from Ryan Furstenau later in the second and sprinted 41 yards to put the game away.

Jeremy Walsh added a 42-yard field goal and Ryan Huck posted a 10-yard scoring run to finish the scoring. “It was good to see the kids have a little fun out there,” said McKeon, whose team improved to 5-1 and 3-1.

Homewood-Flossmoor 34, Bloom 0: Tony Lorezatti threw three touchdown passes and Dan Robinson rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns as No. 6 Homewood-Flossmoor (6-0, 4-0) stayed atop the SICA East. Homewood-Flossmoor outgained Bloom 298 yards to 59 while racking up its 42nd straight conference victory.

Shepard 28, Stagg 12: Allen Ross scored four touchdowns and gained 146 yards on 22 carries to lead No. 13 Shepard (6-0, 4-0) to the SICA North victory. Ross scored on runs of 2 and 24 yards in the first quarter and later added TD runs of 11 and 1 yards.

Doug Barnes and Scot MacDonald scored for Stagg (2-4, 0-3).

Morris 42, Sycamore 6: Chris Zierman broke scoring runs of 85 and 3 yards and Rick Close scored for the defense on a fumble recovery for No. 16 Morris (6-0, 5-0) in a Little Seven victory.

Oswego 41, Kaneland 0: Scott Wulff did it all for No. 17 Oswego (6-0, 5-0), scoring on runs of 7, 86, 10 and 75 yards and finishing with 219 yards on 14 carries. The 10-yard TD barely beat the first-half buzzer. Oswego kept pace with Morris in the Little Seven.
