Heading into the weekend, men’s soccer coach Willy Roy knew his team was better than its 1-4-1 record. Then the Huskies went out and proved it. They beat No. 9 Southern Methodist 2-1 Friday in the opener of the Eastern Illinois Classic, then toppled Missouri-Kansas City 4-1 Sunday for the championship. Nathan Mitchell had both goals in the SMU upset, and he added two assists against Kansas City.
Amy Derry scored two goals as the women’s soccer team blanked Oral Roberts 5-0 Saturday, but the Huskies fell 3-1 Sunday to Detroit Mercy.
The volleyball team continues to steamroll through the Mid-Continent Conference, notching their 26th and 27th consecutive league victories. NIU (10-2, 4-0) routed Wisconsin-Green Bay 15-0, 15-5, 15-2 in 59 minutes Friday, then came back Saturday to destroy Wisconsin-Milwaukee 15-0, 15-0, 15-2. The Huskies had 12 ace serves against Milwaukee and held the Panthers to only six kills.
The men’s golf team didn’t fare well in its Midwestern Invitational at the Oak Club of Genoa, finishing 10th in the 12-team field. Wisconsin, led by individual champ Jim Pejka’s even-par 216 score, won the 54-hole event with a 897 total, 16 shots better than Illinois State.
