Officials expressed reservations in approving more money last week for the Shop in the Park program, which is designed to encourage Hanover Park residents to patronize stores in town. The program had received $5,000 from the village.
“I’m concerned about spending the tax dollars,” said trustee John Dvorak, but “I wouldn’t want to hold back the business community.”
The village had planned to mail to residents a merchant-funded, 50-page book of coupons for shops and services. It was to be part of a business-promotion campaign that got $5,000 from the village and was to kick off June 1.
After delays and dissension over the project, the coupon book has been scaled down to 16 pages and will not be distributed until fall. To keep the project afloat, the Village Board voted Thursday to spend another $7,000, which it may recoup from the sale of advertisements in the book.
Another part of the Shop in the Park campaign is a “value card” that will be mailed to every resident. Merchants regularly will offer discounts to people who use the card.
