A box deemed suspicious at the California State Automobile Association claims office here was blown up Wednesday by a police bomb squad.
“This was a first, finding money,” said platoon leader Jim Seim. The package “arrived in such a way that it aroused our suspicions,” he said. “We were able to render it neutral.”
When the Fruit Loops cereal box was “neutralized” with a small cannon, $24,000 in cash was blasted into the air. Seim said that the box contained bundles of $20 bills and that all but $1,000 survived the explosion.
Seim said the cannon was employed after bomb squad X-rays could not determine whether the contents were dangerous. The blast left a hole about 6 inches in diameter in the wall of the building.
