Stephen Berry, superintendent of High School District 214 in the northwest suburbs, plans to retire at the end of the coming school year.
Berry, 58, a former biology teacher and principal in a district that operates six high schools, said he decided to leave after the 1993-94 school year in part because he will have earned the maximum retirement benefit available from the retirement system.
He will earn $125,000 next year and, after he leaves, receive retirement pay of 75 percent of his average salary over the last several years.
“It seems like a good time for someone else to step in,” Berry said. “Some of the things we established as goals and objectives, we’ve come pretty far along in achieving.”
