From now on, those who spill fuel, chemicals or other hazardous materials in the village will have to reimburse the village for the cleanup.
The “spiller pays” ordinance was approved 6-0 Tuesday by the Village Board. It became effective immediately.
The ordinance is similar to those enacted by other municipalities and was not prompted by a hazardous materials spill, village administrator Gerry Sagona said Thursday.
“Nothing happened,” he said. “It’s just something we did because it’s good fiscal management.”
