Fire-stone tires are coming back to the Indy 500 in 1995 after a 20-year absence. And archrival Goodyear says it welcomes the competition.

“I think it’s great,” said Leo Mehl, director of racing for Goodyear. “When we do our best job, you don’t even remember we’re there. This spurs a development. The only way we get our name in the paper now is if something (bad) happens.”

Firestone, which had its tires on 48 Indy 500 winners before withdrawing in 1974, plans to begin testing next year and says it will supply tires to any team willing to use them.
