He may not have many fans in the White Sox front office, but Carlton Fisk has plenty in the baseball parks of the nation.

Fisk got a standing ovation just for walking to the bullpen in Boston last month. And at the Kingdome Tuesday night, one fan let his feelings be known with a giant banner stretched across the upper deck in center field.

It read simply: “Pudge deserves better.”

Fisk, nicknamed Pudge, needs to catch in 12 more games to set the major-league record for games caught. He has been embroiled in a feud with the Sox front office for years, and the bitterness has only worsened as Fisk, 45, is forced to spend more time on the bench.

Backing up: The fate of reliever Chuck Cary’s career could be decided soon. Cary, 33, has been on the disabled list since April 20 with a back injury he suffered on the last weekend of spring training when he stepped off a misshapen pitcher’s mound in Las Vegas. Cary has been resting his back the last two weeks but began lobbing balls on the sidelines Tuesday.

Schneider says the goal is to have Cary throwing off a mound again by the time the Sox return home next Monday and then make a determination whether Cary can pitch without pain before the team leaves on its next trip May 26.
