Thirty-seven residents of a Northern Illinois University fraternity house had to evacuate the building Saturday afternoon after a fireplace fire got out of control, firefighters said.
No one was injured in the blaze, which traveled from the first-floor fireplace through the second and third floors and broke through the roof of the Pi Kappa Alpha house, 900 Greenbrier Rd., said Capt. Stephen Kessler.
During a party, people had thrown plywood and 2-by-4s into the fire, Kessler said. The framing around the chimney caught on fire, he said.
Damage was estimated at $75,000.
