General Manager Ron Schueler said Friday he might be willing to trade newly demoted second baseman Steve Sax. “I think I’d talk about (trading) anybody,” said Schueler. “I’m not going to give him away.”
Sax, 33, formally lost his starting job to Craig Grebeck on Friday when Gene Lamont said Grebeck would be the Opening Day second baseman, and fellow utility infielder Joey Cora would also see playing time at second.

– Left-hander Wilson Alvarez came within two outs of pitching his second no-hitter Friday. Alvarez had a no-hitter in his debut in 1991. That one was for real. This one would have been only six innings in spring training. Alvarez made it through 5 1/3 innings against the Red Sox before giving up a single to Bob Zupcic. Alvarez gave up three more hits and two runs before finishing for the day. He is 1-2 with a 5.40 earned-run average in 20 innings this spring. Barry Jones eventually got the victory in relief when the Sox came back twice to beat Boston 4-3 in 11 innings.
