– George Washington tried to recruit the state of Washington as surrogate fans in the NCAA West Regional at Seattle.
The school paid for two full-page advertisements Thursday in the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and also announced that it would present 3,000 “Dream the Dream” kits to fans at its semifinal game Friday night game against Michigan. The kits were to include a disposable T-shirt, a George Washington hatchet and the lyrics to the Colonials’ fight song.
Because George Washington was a huge underdog against the Wolverines, the Colonials expected to have a lot of fans cheering for them. The ads and the dream kits were there to get extra support.
“This is one way we can reinforce the behavior that would have probably been natural anyway,” said Bob Chernak, a George Washington vice president.
