The White Sox made their first major cuts Monday, sending six pitchers and six position players to the minors.

Right-handed pitcher Jeff Schwarz and infielders Esteban Beltre and Chris Cron were optioned to Triple-A Nashville, while right-handed pitcher Johnny Ruffin and shortstop Brand Wilson were optioned to Double-A Birmingham.

Rob Ellis, a right-handed pitcher beginning just his second professional season, was optioned to Class-A Sarasota.

Six others were reassigned to the minor-league camp: pitchers Scott Ruffcorn, Chris Howard and Larry Thomas, catcher Clemente Alvarez, infielder Drew Denson and outfielder Brad Komminsk.

Schwarz pitched four innings without giving up a run and held opposing hitters to a .077 batting average. Ruffcorn pitched two runless, hitless innings.

Big numbers: Bo Jackson is making it difficult for the Sox to turn him away. He was 1 for 3 with a two-run bases-loaded double Monday in a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. Jackson leads the team in hits (16) and total bases (23), is second in runs batted in (9) and is batting .372.
