David Schoo, the St. Charles man who along with his wife is accused of leaving his children home alone over Christmas, was arrested Saturday night and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

De Kalb County sheriff’s police stopped Schoo, 45, for allegedly speeding and arrested him after deciding that Schoo was under the influence, Deputy Douglas Cook said in a report of the incident.

Schoo was clocked at 70 m.p.h. in a 55-m.p.h. zone on Illinois Highway 64 just west of Malta Road at about 6 p.m., police said.

Schoo was taken to the De Kalb County Jail, where he was given a Breathalyzer test, according to the sheriff’s office. Results of that test were not being released, pending review by the De Kalb County state’s attorney’s office.

A duty officer at the sheriff’s office said Schoo was believed to have been alone at the time of his arrest.

Schoo was released on $300 bond, police said.

Attorneys representing Schoo in the criminal abandonment and cruelty to children case could not be reached for comment.

Schoo, an engineer for a smoke alarm company, and his wife, Sharon, 35, gained worldwide notoriety when police discovered that the couple had gone on a nine-day Mexican trip while allegedly leaving their children, Nicole, 10, and Diana, 4, at home by themselves.

The Schoos, whose next court date in the case is Friday, have opted not to take advantage of court-approved visitation rights with their children because, according to their attorneys, they don’t want the exchange with their children to be conveyed to the state’s attorney’s office.
