Chuck Cary came to spring training with the White Sox as something of a mystery guest. He could leave with a full-time job.
Cary, who spent last season pitching for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, worked two more scoreless innings in an 11-4 White Sox loss to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. In 10 1/3 innings, Cary has given up only five hits and no runs. He’s holding opposing hitters to a .143 batting average (5 for 35).
Cary, a 33-year-old left-hander who pitched for Detroit, Atlanta and the Yankees before going to Japan, was the only one of four White Sox pitchers to escape without giving up a run. Starter Wilson Alvarez was pounded, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks. He left after three innings with his earned-run average at 6.43.
– Carlton Fisk, in his first competition this spring, had two hits in an intrasquad game in Sarasota.
– Ellis Burks, playing against his former teammates, was 2 for 2 with a run scored and a sacrifice bunt. He crushed a double high off the left-field wall to score a run off Roger Clemens in the first inning.
