Most people think storage has to be something closed, hidden away. But if you allow yourself to be a bit creative, some items that need to be stored can double as decorative accessories.
For example, all those books you’ve accumulated probably have colorful jackets that just might be what you need to lift the spirits of an otherwise dull area.
And when it comes to areas, get creative again. Did you ever consider putting books above the kitchen cabinets?
A baker’s rack also is great for storage. Just about anything can go on a baker’s rack and look good. And don’t think the baker’s rack belongs only in the kitchen. It serves well in a bathroom too as towel storage.
You’ve seen how well a pegboard handles tools in the garage, but have you ever seen one in the kitchen? Painted to coordinate with the walls or cupboards, a pegboard in the kitchen can be an interesting way to hang a display of pots, pans and other culinary accessories.
Wall units often are sold in modular form, so you can customize the purchase to your needs. These modular wall units offer a great solution to the storage problem. In addition to providing storage, they offer form, style and, in some cases, light to the room.
Wall units offer drop-lid desks, dry bars, silverware storage drawers and closed space for items such as record albums.
How about being creative with closed storage? Open the doors under the bathroom sink. Is the area jammed with necessary stuff? Install a shelf that spans the width and depth of the inside of the cabinet.
You’ll have to build it in two parts so you can take it out easily if you need to get to the plumbing. Build a support around the sides and the back for the shelves to sit on, then attach the two parts behind the pipes with a clamp you can unscrew when necessary. You will need to cut out the shelves to fit around the pipes, but a good handyman should be able to accomplish this without too much difficulty.
Now you have two layers on which to put all that “junk.” Put the lighter things, like toilet and tissue paper, on the top shelf.

So much stuff, so little space. But more than you had before.
