Kaspar ended up in the flatbed of a 1993 pickup truck that had been pulled over for speeding at about 2 a.m. at Illinois Highways 59 and 68.
The driver of the pickup, Conrad Banda, 30, of Elgin, apparently decided to make a run for it while Kaspar’s partner was checking out his driver’s license, which was expired, Barrington Police Sgt. William Friedl said. Meanwhile, Kaspar, who thought he noticed something suspicious in the truck, was leaning into the flatbed when Banda sped away.
To protect himself from being run over, Kaspar grabbed onto the pickup, Friedl said.
What followed was a chase south on Illinois Highway 59 through at least five towns, Friedl said. The pickup was traveling at speeds greater than 80 m.p.h in pursuit by two squad cars, Friedl said.
Kaspar managed to climb out of the pickup when the suspect slowed down at Illinois Higheays 59 and 20-miles from where the suspect initially was pulled over. Kaspar hopped into a squad car and police continued the chase.
Banda faces seven charges, including a felony for the unlawful restraint of the police officer, Friedl said.
Charges against Banda include aggravated fleeing and eluding, reckless conduct, unlawful restraint, resisting a police officer, unlawful use of a driver’s license and speeding.
Bond was set at $30,000 early Saturday morning. Banda was being held in Cook County Jail pending a preliminary hearing, Friedl said.
