Two Chicago brothers who police said tossed clothes out of their car during a chase with a police car on the Tri-State Tollway last week have been charged with retail theft.

According to Libertyville Police Chief Dan McCormick, Stevie Hearan, 31, and his brother, Ronald, 21, were charged with felony theft for allegedly taking $1,500 worth of clothes on Wednesday from Burlington Coat Factory, 920 S. Milwaukee Ave.

After setting off an alarm as he left the store with the clothes reportedly tucked under his trenchcoat, Stevie Hearan jumped into a rented Ford Taurus and fled south on Milwaukee toward Town-Line Road, police said. At Town-Line Road, a Vernon Hills police officer who had heard a message over her police radio of the theft began chasing the fleeing men east on Town-Line, police said.

After the two turned onto the tollway headed south, police said, they dumped hundreds of dollars of clothes on the highway in an attempt to get rid of the evidence, police said.

The chase ended when the fleeing car collided with another car on Illinois Highway 22, just west of the tollway exit. Minor injuries were reported.
