Village trustees are urging Elgin Unit School District U46 to make safety improvements requested by parents at Laurel Hill Elementary School.
“I don’t sense a strong concern for safety and stability at Laurel Hill School on your part,” Trustee Karen Marks told school officials at a Village Board meeting Monday night.
U46 officials said that Laurel Hill is safe but acknowledged that it needs improvements. District officials said they lack funds to fix up the school.
Trustee Larry Pikora said that among other improvements, the school, at 1750 Laurel Ave., needs an area away from buses where parents who drive their children to school can drop off their youngsters. And he ridiculed a proposed district expenditure of $63,000 on a computer lab for Streamwood High School, saying the money would be better spent at Laurel Hill.
Trustees have no legal way of forcing the district to spend money on Laurel Hill. Still, U46 officials agreed to continue discussing the issue.
