Billy Burnette Coming Home (Capricorn) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Billy Burnette returns to his country roots with the appropriately titled “Coming Home.” Fresh from a six-year career detour with the post-Lindsey Buckingham Fleetwood Mac, Burnette, a 1986 Academy of Country Music nominee for Top New Male Vocalist honors, is back in Nashville with a strong effort that looks likely to return him to the country charts. Burnette’s brand of country has a strong rock ‘n’ roll edge, though he hedges his bets by adding tempering fiddles, acoustic guitars and mandolins to raucous tunes like “Tangled Up in Texas,” “Let Your Heart Make Up Your Mind” and “The Light of Love.” All three cry out for radio play, as does the album’s highlight-the sprightly “Walk With Me.”
An appealing vocalist and talented songwriter (he co-wrote all 10 of the album’s songs) Burnette’s “Coming Home” deserves an effusive “welcome back.”
