Commuter parking lot rates should not increase until village officials decide what to with the extra money, said one council member.

The high demand for commuter parking near the village’s Metra station has council members studying a proposal to raise the price of quarterly parking permits. The plan calls for permit increases to $70 from $66 in those lots closest to the station, increases to $65 from $60 for the village’s more remote parking lots, and replacement of the village’s $1, 12-hour meters with machines that require $1.50.

Added to the $37,000 collected last year in parking fines, the permit increases would net the village several thousand dollars in extra revenue, said village manager Kurt Bressner.

No firm plans have been made for the anticipated extra funds. And until commissioners decide exactly where the money would go, the parking plan should remain on the drawing board, said Commissioner Gregory Vogler.

Suggestions include applying the money to repair commuter lots, using it to help offset the cost of parking enforcement or using help pay for the eight new commuter shuttle buses, which set the village back $1.5 million this year.

Commissioners will review the plan again Monday.
