Freddy Jones Band
The Freddy Jones Band (Poor Boy) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
On their self-titled debut CD Chicago`s Freddy Jones Band show signs of transcending the ”Deadhead” label some have unfairly saddled them with. To be sure, ”Texas Skies” and ”The Puppet” have that relaxed choogling groove so characteristic of the Grateful Dead, while lead guitarist Wayne Healy`s melodic, cascading solo on the latter recalls vintage Jerry Garcia. The Jones boys, though, have a bluesy side as well, as evidenced on the funky ”Sing and Play” and on ”Peace By Piece” which both feature searing solos by Healy. Lead vocalist Marty Lloyd appears to be the sextet`s best songwriter, and his luminescent ”In a Daydream” is simply a killer tune, boosted by his strong vocals and guitarist Healy`s quicksilver melodicism. All in all an impressive debut from one of the local club scene`s top draws.
