In conjunction with the Willowbrook Police Department, the Du Page County sheriff`s office has produced a video giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at a typical Du Page road check designed to get unsafe drivers off the road.

The video was shot in August at Illinois Highway 83 near 75th Street, and shows law enforcement officials mapping out the road check and details the procedure used to nab drunken drivers and unsafe vehicles.

The video, which is to be broadcast in Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale and Willowbrook on community access cable station WHBC, will serve as a warning to drivers to stay alert when driving during the holiday season.

”Out of about 500 vehicles stopped, we made 50 arrests” for DUI, vehicle safety failures and outstanding warrants, Willowbrook Police Chief Raymond Arthurs said of the sweep portrayed on the video.

Last Tuesday, a vehicle wrecked in a drunken-driving accident was displayed alongside Illinois Highway 83 at 75th Street with big signs informing motorists exactly what could happen to them if they drive under the influence.

Arthurs said he plans to set up the car-crash display during every holiday season-Christmas and New Year`s, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Thanksgiving-in hopes of hammering his message home visually. And, he said, he will always use a different wrecked vehicle.

”Unfortunately, there is no shortage of vehicles crashed in an accident involving alcohol,” he said.
