Sundays

Blind (DGC) (STAR)(STAR) 1/2

Harriet Wheeler`s mesmerizingly breathy singing defines The Sundays mod-pop sound. Wheeler`s elfin vocal range (imagine Rickie Lee Jones on helium)

broadened since the Bristol, England, group`s 1990 debut LP ”Reading, Writing and Arithmetic,” but she`s left her bandmates behind. David Gavurin`s repetitive guitar work is like the flour in a cookie mix-necessary but not very tasty. ”Blind” billows with introspective, if cryptic, lyricism and meandering, musically pleasing songs like ”Love” and ”Goodbye” lend a folksy atmosphere.

A somber cover of the Keith Richards-Mick Jagger song ”Wild Horses”

(the only tune not penned by Wheeler and Gavurin) is surprsingly fitting as Wheeler`s vocal phrasing ripples and surges.
