Leo 57, Brother Rice 48-Leo (6-3, 2-1) used balanced scoring and a huge halftime lead to hold off No. 17 Brother Rice and give coach Jack Fitzgerald his 300th career victory. He is 300-143 in 17 seasons.
”It sure is a good feeling for me,” said Fitzgerald. ”I`m especially proud, because most of those wins came in the Catholic League.”
Leo jumped to a 21-11 advantage after one quarter and never trailed as Richard Willock (14 points), Eugene Johnson (13) and Kolbi Crittenden (11) led the attack. Jim Sexton scored 20 of his game-high 22 points in the second half for Brother Rice (5-2, 1-2).
Fenwick 39, St. Ignatius 37-Brian Zubor, who suffered through an 0-for-10 shooting night, hit a free throw with :07 left to help seal the Catholic League victory for No. 18 Fenwick (5-2, 2-1). Zubor, who came into the game averaging 21 points per contest, finished with three points.
”I thought it was a ferociously contested defensive struggle,” said Fenwick coach John Quinn. ”We`ve got to work on shooting better. We`re lucky to win.”
Adam Kotowski led Fenwick with 14 points. Floyd Glinsey led St. Ignatius
(2-5, 1-1) with 14.
