”but we need some people. We need some linebackers. We need a cornerback. We need a speed receiver. We need a tight end.”
The greatest need, obviously, is at middle linebacker, where Mike Singletary`s retirement will leave a huge void. ”I don`t know what`s going to happen there,” Ditka said. ”Dante Jones has been backing him up, so you assume he`s the heir apparent. That`s not necessarily true.”
Ditka noted that Jones ”hasn`t held up very well” physically. Jones is out for the season after sustaining a groin injury at Houston.
– The cornerback Ditka is looking to replace clearly isn`t Donnell Woolford, who, after a slow start, has become one of the team`s top defensive players.
”Donnell Woolford played as good yesterday as I`ve seen him play since I`ve been here,” said Ditka.
