Northern Illinois offensive tackle Brad Capes, outside linebacker Scott Hein and free safety Tom Rhomberg were selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District V football team Monday. Northern, Notre Dame and Ball State each had three players selected to the 18-player squad.

The three Huskies seniors` names are now placed on the All-America ballot. It was Capes` third straight year on the All-District V team.

Big hitter: Linebacker Mandel Hester, a freshman from Thornton High School, registered 21 tackles in the Huskies` 25-8 season-ending loss to Toledo. In the first 10 games this year, he had 13 stops.

Big loss: The women`s basketball team has lost junior forward Angela Lockett for the season. Last season`s MVP in the North Star Conference tournament underwent reconstructive surgery on her left knee Thursday. Lockett won the team`s Rebounding Excellence Award her first two seasons.

Volleyball hosts: Northern plays host to the Mid-Continent Conference volleyball tournament Friday and Saturday. The top-seeded Huskies meet Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. Friday, following the Eastern Illinois-Western Illinois match. The winners meet at 3 p.m. Saturday for the title and automatic bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championships. The Huskies (27-5), who lost only two games en route to a 16-0 league mark, have an outside shot at earning an NCAA bid.

Singular honor: Sophomore sweeper Jay Konrad was the lone Huskies soccer player to earn first-team all-Mid-Con honors.
