State police made 12 times more traffic stops than usual during a three-day crackdown on speeding on the North-South Tollway, the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority reported Tuesday.
Twenty-four troopers from Police District 15-20 more than usual-made a total of 580 traffic stops last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday on Interstate Highway 355, or the North-South Tollway, said spokeswoman Sari Mintz.
The enforcement blitz averaged 193 stops per day, compared to 16 per day on a typical weekday on the North-South Tollway alone, and 133 per day across the entire 273-mile tollway system, Mintz said. The total would have been even higher, she said, had inclement weather Friday not taken troopers off crackdown duty to handle accidents.

A total of 159 citations and 114 written warnings for speeding were handed outover the three-day crackdown on the tollway, which is 17.5 miles long.
The fastest speed clocked by troopers was 92 m.p.h., Mintz said.
