Fat City (Columbia) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
It`s been three years since her Grammy-winning debut album, ”Steady On,” but singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin makes the wait more than worthwhile on her followup. If anything, ”Fat City” shows Colvin`s marked maturity as a songsmith. In the stream-of-consciousness ”Object of My Affection” she evokes the name of Sylvia Plath, while in ”Polaroids” Colvin`s not above poking fun at herself: ”Back in our home New York/Walking the streets forlorn/We`re all in our uniforms/Black and black/Doing that slouch and jive/ The artist must survive.” Potential radio hits include the rocking paean
”Tennessee” and ”Climb On (A Back That`s Strong),” the latter featuring soaring vocal harmonies from Bruce Hornsby and Mary-Chapin Carpenter. Ending with the gorgeously sung ”I Don`t Know Why,” which deserves to become a standard, ”Fat City” is a stunning work of contemporary folk-pop from one of its leading lights.
