Inspiral Carpets

Revenge of the Goldfish (Elektra) (STAR)(STAR)

A couple years ago a spate of mop-topped Engish bands traipsed in tunics, their Doors-inspired wailing backed by moody keyboards. While other bands realized that the Friar Tuck novelty has worn thin, Inspiral Carpets just won`t let go. ”Revenge of the Goldfish” (so named for the painting used for cover art) does pull off a couple tracks that rollick in the tradition of the late-`80s Manchester scene. Few are worthy of the quintet`s more grandiose

”The Beast Inside” album, however. Singer Tom Hingley bogs things down with his syrupy, overwrought vocals. His tortured crooning sounds suspiciously like Anthony Newley on the song ”Generations.”
