Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine 1992 The Love Album (Chrysalis) (STAR)
(STAR)(STAR)
Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine assaults sentimentality and the schmaltz of pop culture with ”1992 The Love Album.” The punky English duo swipes the disenfranchised attitude of the Sex Pistols, twists it and sends it on a collision course with sweeping orchestral sampling. The bawdy ”Suppose You Gave A Funeral And Nobody Came” evolves into a lush instrumental worthy of New Order. But venom is the order of singer Jim Morrison`s lyrics. Amid weighty matters of disease and destruction he ponders pressing issues (”Is Wrestling Fixed”). Sometimes Morrison`s brush stroke is a little too simplistic, as when he links Thatcherism to the disenchantment of a failed relationship on ”While You Were Out.” Shower singers take note: As the Sex Pistols did unto Frank Sinatra`s ”My Way,” Carter does unto ”Man of La Mancha” by mangling ”The Impossible Dream.”
