Beware the black bar.
For 50 years it`s been the signature of Glamour magazine`s Dos and Don`ts feature spotlighting the fashion and beauty faux pas of legions of women captured in the act on the sidewalks of New York.
Begun as a hokey Hollywood feature-”Do take a bright evening tip from Olivia de Havilland and have an embroidered chiffon kerchief to top your hair”-the spot has amused and endured.
”It`s the best read page in the magazine,” says Joanne Mattera, editor of ”Glamour Dos & Don`ts Hall of Fame” (Villard, $7.95).
”What we do is sort of what a sister or best friend does; kind of tease you, or poke fun,” says Mattera. ”But it`s done with affection.”
A favorite that Mattera uncovered while sifting through the hundreds of contenders for the collection: a 1966 bubble bouffant ”Hairdo from Hell.”
Another image immortalized by the magazine`s ”shoot-and-run” paparazzi- style photographers is one that`s attained near-icon status: ”The woman walking on the street, tugging at her underwear.
”We`re not saying don`t tug at your underwear,” she says. ”Just don`t do it in public.”
