When the president of the United States tried to make reservations to stay over for the presidential debate Sunday, these elegant hostelries had no rooms for the head of state:

– The Adams Mark hotel, with its $1,200 presidential suite.

– The Ritz-Carlton, with its $1,500 Ritz-Carlton suite.

– The Hyatt Regency at Union Station, with its $440 garden suite.

So this time George Bush will be staying at the Drury Inn at Union Station, flagship of an economy-minded motel chain.

Room rates: $72 to $120 a night.

No presidential suite.

At least not yet. A plaque soon will adorn the wall.

While some employees of the hotel expressed surprise at this first-time stopover by a president at a Drury Inn, the owner is tickled.

”We`re very proud he selected us,” Charles Drury said.
