Gordon Tech 6, Brother Rice 3-Brother Rice was on the verge of upsetting the visiting, 14th-ranked Rams. But David Reavy wasn`t about to let it happen. Facing fourth and goal on the Rams` 2, Brother Rice decided to go for the win. But Reavy, a cornerback, stopped Kevin Nelligan to lift the Rams to 3-0 and drop the Crusaders to 1-2.
The game`s only touchdown drive consumed 11 minutes of the third and fourth quarters before Bob Gulino scored on a 1-yard run. The extra-point attempt failed.
”I learned that from (Brother Rice coach Tom) Mitchell-take our time and emphasize ball control,” said Gordon coach Tom Winiecki. ”That`s a typical Mitchell move. Both he and I were trying to do the same thing. Our offensive goal was to either run 50 plays or take 28 mintues off the clock.”
Brother Rice`s only score came on Keith Marc`s 22-yard field goal in the first quarter. But Mitchell decided not to play for overtime at the end. ”At that juncture, I would have done the same thing,” said Winiecki.
Lake Forest 38, Mundelein 6-Lake Forest (3-0, 3-0 in the North Suburban Conference) led 38-0 after three periods. Josh Lerner scored the Scouts` first touchdown on a 38-yard run, kicked five extra points and a 22-yard field goal and threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Peter Gold. Jason Klapper, Cliff Rice, and Kevan Comstock ran for the other touchdowns for Lake Forest; Comstock`s 24-yard TD run was the longest. Mundelein (0-3, 0-3) scored in the last quarter on a 13-yard pass from Tim Atkins to Ethan Karolczak.Maine West 28, Glenbrook South 13-Maine (2-1) got a big day from Carl Voltaire (26 carries, 155 yards, one touchdown, one 2-point conversion run) and from Jim Somerville (a 62-yard TD pass to Garrett Larkin and a 5-yard touchdown run) to top Glenbrook (2-1). Maine piled up 239 yards on the ground and scored in every quarter.
”I had nothing to do with (the win). I just stood and watched the game,” said Maine West coach Ray Pettenuzzo, whose offensive line got large praise from losing coach Bob Schoenwetter.
”We just plain got beat. The line play was the difference,” said Schoenwetter, whose team scored on an 87-yard run by Brad Gottfried (17 carries, 169 yards) and a 5-yard run by Doug Pollina. ”I hope this is a reality check for our kids.”
Glenbrook North 14, New Trier 6-Scott Reynolds` interception and his 55-yard kickoff return were the difference as Glenbrook North (1-2) claimed the road Central Suburban crossover victory.

Reynolds` interception ended the Trevians` first possession and set up the Spartans` nine-play, 49-yard scoring drive, which ended with Kevin Nelson`s 1-yard touchdown run. Paul Catsaros` extra point made it 7-0, giving Glenbrook all the points it would need.
With the score 7-6, Reynolds` return on a reverse set up Glenbrook North on New Trier`s 45. Two plays later, Chris Marnell hit Mike Volpe for a 39-yard touchdown.
New Trier stopped the Spartans on the final possession of the first quarter on Ken Fanaro`s goal-line interception. The Trevians then drove 85 yards on 15 plays for Andy Loria`s 1-yard scoring run.
Tinley Park 50, Rich East 29-John Domina (nine carries, 168 yards) had 31- and 50-yard touchdown runs and James Manning (12 carries, 140 yards)
scored three times, once on a 60-yard run, as unbeaten Tinley Park rolled to its third straight victory.
Lane 34, CVS 0- Greg Smith ran for four touchdowns and Johnnie Thomas one as No. 13 Lane Tech (3-0) won at home. Smith rushed for 70 yards on 14 carries and scored on runs of two, 23, 14 and four as Lane moved out to a 21-0 halftime lead. Lane held Chicago Vocational (1-2) to 53 yards.
St. Rita 24, Fenwick 0-Jason Wallace completed 12 of 20 for 218 yards to lead No. 20 St. Rita (2-1) to a 24-0 victory over visiting Fenwick (1-2) in a Catholic League crossover game.
Leedunn Wesley rushed for touchdowns of nine and six yards and Wallace hit Tony Simmons for a 41-yard touchdown reception.
