White Sox manager Gene Lamont thinks that third baseman Robin Ventura should win a Gold Glove award despite his 22 errors.

”From what I`ve seen, he`s the best defensive third baseman in our league,” he said. ”I voted for six years when I was in Pittsburgh, and I never looked to see how many errors a guy had. You just look and decide who played the best against you.”

– Jack McDowell will have four more starts, including Sunday`s against the Indians in the final game of the series, but Lamont declined to speculate on how many victories McDowell needs to have a legitimate chance at a Cy Young Award.

”He`s 20-7 right now,” reminded Lamont, ”and that`s not bad. I know with what (the A`s Dennis) Eckersley`s done it`s going to be hard for him, but he ought to have real strong consideration. I don`t know what they vote on, but he`s done an awful lot for our team. He stops losing streaks, and he saves our bullpen.”

– Ventura and trainer Herm Schneider each received a Hallmark award from the Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities before Saturday night`s game. Ventura`s award was presented by former White Sox great Billy Pierce.

– Sox radio announcer Ed Farmer attended the Notre Dame-Michigan game, but had to leave early in the third quarter to get back in time to broadcast Saturday night`s game.
