A trustee is calling for more security measures at local gasoline stations and convenience stores, to protect employees, and he also wants more truth in packaging at gasoline pumps.

But the village attorney says the ideas, if adopted, could wind up costing the village a lot of money.

Trustee Stephen Martin said this week that he supports passage of ordinances that would require bulletproof glass booths for employees at all 24-hour gasoline stations and convenience stores. He also called for an ordinance mandating large, clearly marked labels identifying gasohol-dispensing pumps.

”It just makes sense to do this, especially now that so many places are open in the dead of night,” Martin said.

But Village Atty. Peter Zamis said requiring a business to install bulletproof booths or trying to override federal gasoline labeling regulations with a local ordinance could invite a court battle the village would likely lose.
