At least 17 sailors were hurt Sunday in a chain-reaction accident involving buses carring 300 marchers from Great Lakes Naval Base to the American Legion parade in Chicago.

The brakes failed on one of eight white Navy buses traveling on U.S. Highway 41 at the intersection of Half Day Road. Three buses were damaged in the crash, and the remainder of the sailors, in starched white uniforms and caps, were stuck in the parking lot of two fast-food restaurants for hours.

Eight sailors were treated and released from Lake Forest Hospital, and six others were treated and released from Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Three sailors were taken to Highland Park Hospital, where one was released and the other two were transferred to the naval base`s hospital for overnight observation, a hospital spokeswoman said. She said the two sailors were in fair condition.

The accident occurred at 10:43 a.m. The buses were carrying about a 50-member flag unit, a band and marchers.

”One of the buses` brakes failed and it caused a domino effect,” said a spokeswoman from the Highland Park Police Department, who would not give her name.
