It was Hollywood Stars night Saturday at Dodger Stadium, and it`s a good thing these people have other jobs.
The only person on the field who seemed to have a clue about baseball was actor Tom Selleck, who was one of the few who failed to get a hit. Selleck hit a pair of monster line drives to center field, and both were caught by Jonathan Silverman, star of ”Brighton Beach Memoirs.”
– In case you missed it, the Dodgers were losing by a run and down to their last out in Friday night`s 12-inning loss to the Cubs when they called on an unusual pinch-hitter. Pitcher Orel Hershiser kept the Dodgers alive and stunned the crowd with a single. But Carlos Hernandez forced Hershiser on a groundout to end the game. Hershiser is 11 for 54 this season, a .204 batting average.
– Dodgers rookie Eric Karros has had an impressive season, but he`s been especially hot since the All-Star break. Karros leads the NL in RBIs since the All-Star Game with 32, four more than Atlanta`s Terry Pendleton.
– It didn`t take Kevin Gross long to realize he wouldn`t be tossing back-to-back no-hitters. Gross threw the season`s first no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants last Monday night. He set down the Cubs in the first inning Saturday night, but gave up a hit and a run in the second.
– Rookie Pedro Astacio, who is scheduled to start Sunday against the Cubs, is 2-1 after four starts with an 0.87 ERA and two shutouts. The native of the Dominican Republic has not allowed an earned run in his last 15 innings.
– Cubs rookie Jim Bullinger had a string of 14 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run snapped in the second inning Saturday when Henry Rodriguez hit a two-run homer.
