Gov. Jim Edgar had been on the fairgrounds for 15 minutes, but it was more than enough time to inject politics into the Illinois State Fair.

Edgar, speaking to county fair organizers and beauty queens from across the state Friday during County Fair Day, said they should oppose casino gambling because it could take funds away from their fairs. ”Casino gambling could have a negative effect on county fairs because it is a threat to horse racing,” Edgar said.

”We had more money for county fairs this year because of the success of parimutuel betting. I advise you to take a look at the issue, make up your mind and let your legislators know how you feel before they come back.”

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is asking lawmakers this fall to legalize a $2 billion mega-casino and entertainment center in Chicago`s downtown. Edgar has been a staunch opponent of the project.

His point made, Edgar and his wife, Brenda, posed for pictures with all of the county fair queens.

”I know I`m looking forward to it,” he told the crowd. ”But Brenda`s here, so no need to worry.”
