We`ve noticed more than a few pinstriped legs pedaling down Wabash, paisley ties flapping in the breeze. Can the Loop parking ban be enticing commuters to do their rounds by bike?
Yes and no. On one foot, less congested streets mean cyclists can breathe-and pedal-a little easier. On the other foot, now that the city is decapitating and unearthing 1,111 Loop parking meters, cyclists find fewer places to lock up. Last week, a team effort by the city and the not-for-profit Chicagoland Bicycle Federation spared 89 meters in heavily cycled areas and converted them to ”Bike Parking Only” status.
Better yet, the city Department of Transportation is awaiting a $750,000 federal grant to install about 1,500 permanent bike racks all over town. This fall, when the racks take root, cycling helmets might become the business suit`s trendiest accessory.
