An overwhelming 87 percent of kids whose parents smoke don`t like it and worry that Mom or Dad is being hurt by the habit. Nearly as many flat-out think their parents may someday die from smoking.

A nationwide Harris poll of 1,200 adults and their 2,600 kids turned up the numbers, which show that if tobacco education programs aren`t getting through to adults, at least they`re reaching children. Yet the desire to model behavior after parents often turns many of the same children into smokers, which ”adds to the emotional turmoil they feel,” said psychologist Lee Salk. The survey was conducted by the makers of ProStep, a nicotine patch that helps smokers quit.
