Look for the Dodgers` Brett Butler to be named National League Player of the Month for July. The voting was conducted Monday. Butler batted .442 for the month with an astounding .547 on-base average. He stole 18 bases, scored 23 times, drove in 12 runs, walked 22 times and had 42 hits in 29 games. None of the Cubs` hitters had a good enough month to be considered, but Ryne Sandberg and Sammy Sosa both were nominated for NL Player of the Week last week. Sandberg batted .500 (13 for 26), including a club-record-tying streak of eight consecutive hits, while Sosa batted .407 (11 for 27) with two homers and six RBIs last week. Neither won. Eric Karros of the Dodgers won. He hit .320 with two homers and 10 RBI.
– With his double in the third inning Monday night, Sandberg extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He is a week away from his career high.
