Rick Mears will have his injured right wrist checked in Indianapolis by Dr. Terry Trammell after dropping out of Sunday`s Michigan 500 because of pain and weakness in the wrist, which he first injured in the Indianapolis 500.

Mears has missed two races because of the injury and retired after 92 laps Sunday when he found it difficult to hold on to the steering wheel.

– Hiro Matsushita, who hasn`t driven since breaking a leg in practice for the Indy 500, will test drive Monday and Tuesday and could return to the cockpit by next Sunday`s race at Cleveland. Regardless of whether Matsushita returns, Brazilian Raoul Boesel will continue to drive for car owner Dick Simon.

Simon plans to run Boesel and Scott Brayton as a two-car team next year, with Matsushita`s status undetermined. Young Mexican star Adrian Fernandez will get a ride in a Simon-prepared car at the final Indy-car race in Laguna Seca, Calif.

– Sunday`s victory by Scott Goodyear was especially sweet for car owner Derrick Walker, who nearly was broke after last year`s Indy 500 effort with Willy T. Ribbs.

Walker said it was especially satisfying to outduel a Roger Penske entry

(Paul Tracy). Walker once was a team manager for Penske. ”It shows that the little guys can win,” said Walker.

– Eddie Cheever angrily kicked a tire after climbing out of his wrecked Lola- Ford, which crashed on the 35th lap. Cheever, who had radioed his team that

”I think something broke” just before the crash, said: ”The first time I went to the men`s room at Indy there was something written on the wall. It said, `There are two types of Indy drivers. Those that have hit the wall and those that are gonna hit the wall.` I am now officially in Indy car.”
