Mac McAnally
Live and Learn (MCA) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
A storyteller par excellence with a keen poetic streak and a honey voice that recalls James Taylor`s, McAnally`s seventh album might be the charm. Songs like ”Weight of the World” and ”Not That Long Ago” are as much adult pop as country, and the themes the singer-guitarist tackles are universal: the transitory nature of life, lost loves and the foolishness of materialism. Songs like ”Not That Long Ago” and ”Somewhere Nice Forever” will tug at even the most resistant of heartstrings. That`s not to say McAnally doesn`t know how to loosen up. The raucous ”Junk Cars” celebrates one of the rural South`s greatest passions, while ”Socrates” is a paean to a small-town garage mechanic and philosopher.
